NUTURING FLOW IN WORSHIP...

I thought this might be helpful for new worship leaders or those desiring to have more flow in their worship times...

The element termed as "flow" is an important aspect of worship leading. I feel it is somewhat akin to the "prophetic". When Christian music came on the scene and we all tried to get hip to relate (which is not a bad thing), recorded worship ended up becoming the main source of content for worship communication. Worship choruses began to be crammed into pop music culture and we ended up with the "start-stop-start-stop" style of any typical pop music album.

Much of this was due I think to being able to access songs as commodities to exchange and sell and pass on to others. Not a bad thing in itself if it helps get God more worship and connect people to Him. But unfortunately, the need to define a song into 3 minutes and make it tangible to market and distribute, ended up dictating structure and form in our worship services creating a culture of worship where we are "involved" as long as the song lasts. Then we're on to the next 3 minute experience. Because of these cultural influences on worship, I think many are now realizing that there is and always has been a progression to the throne and it requires our uninterrupted focus.

So what I personally like to do is, try to treat a worship service as "one continual song". Even though there may be 4 to 6 songs in a congregational songservice (not referring to harp and bowl, etc), it is important to treat the songservice as one entity -not several beginnings and endings. If I was to meet a person or visit a friend, I wouldn't show up at their door and start a conversation, then stop it abruptly and walk out the door, turn around, and come back in and start it again, etc.... Do you see where I'm going? I would engage someone in conversation and I would go deeper and deeper in that conversation, experiencing some level of intimacy and fullness until there was at some point a closure and I said; "Good bye. Can't wait until the next time we get together!"

Some ways I suggest we can go about implementing more "flow" into our worship times (and this bugs some musicians), is to try to keep everything in the same key as much as possible (but also don't be boxed in by that) . It doesn't matter so much on the entry songs (upbeat songs) but once we get into a flow, moving within the same key is very effective in maintaining depth and for riding out that stream as far as it can go. So stay there and let it flow, rise/swell and dip, peak and ebb until you feel it's time to move on. Don't rush it. Remember, it's all for Him and once the Holy Spirit steps in, sense where He is directing. When you find that place and learn to follow Him as best you can, you will experience the greatest worship experiences of your life. And remember. Simple is good. God is very deep. But He is always very simple. The Gospel is simple. Less is more! So remember K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) lol!

I find that landing on a 2, 3 or 4 chord progression in which spontaneous worship can breathe/swell in the middle of songs or in between songs is seriously cool. So maybe I'm doing (for familiarity sake) "Here I am to worship in "E" and towards the close of the song I start repeating the chorus in free worship (loving every minute of that by-the-way) allowing it to peak, flow, rise......then when it starts to ebb and when it feels right, I transition into say; "Fire Fall Down" also in E. Then, when that ebbs, maybe I feel impressed to take it up or take it soft into intimate worship. So for example I might make a decision to transition into "Shout Unto God" or into "Wrap Me In your Arms", the point is, it flows. There's no abruptness. No jerking. It's gradual. There will be a time to shift. A time for the drummer to count off with the sticks. But sense when that is. Don't come out of the flow prematurely.

It's like carrying the ark. We need to learn how to handle the presence of God. And there are ways and methods that God will show us in order for us to be skilled at what we really are, priests. It takes a "priest" to lead people into the depths of His presence. Not a musician.

Ones coming from the depths, through the flames...

“I believe what God is doing right now in His Body is greater than we can know. I believe He is causing His people to have to make deep, tough decisions about our devotion and our walk. He is circumcising us...offering to cut American Christianity off of us.... to all those who will submit to the blade. These are some of the hardest times and longest enduring struggles we have faced…..but I interject that it may seem so "hard" and "unbearable" because our roots are so steeped in the false and the temporal. God is trying to re-direct our focus back to Christianity 101…off of the "feel good" – "have it all" – "become a millionaire so that people will know you are blessed and turn to God" American Christianity. God is causing the rubber to meet the road and is freeing us… For we are not here to LIVE…(to LIVE IT UP)! But to die so that others might live! And in that dying to self, we find true life! But the surgeon's blade is sharp… and our impulse is to get off the table! But what is happening now is such a MAJOR BLESSING for His people! May all in His Body embrace the Master’s plan and submit to his mighty hand. He is roused. And he is not playing games any more. He is ready to take his people at their word and ready to perform His! So now as we embrace this circumcision, we are Josephs. The ones coming from the depths, through the flames, to be put on the world stage to snatch from the fire all those coming behind us."

Wake up...... Believe again!

This past week I have been impressed to rise up and declare God's goodness and the personal destiny over my family. There has been a great time of preparation. A time a pruning. Years actually. But now I feel as if we are on the very brink of seeing some awesome things happen in Body of Christ....personally and corporately.

Our enemy wants to cloak reality in darkness and keep us bound in the "old" and the disappointments of the past. But we need to throw off that lie and storm heaven's gates once again and cry out to our God..."Lord I still believe! Lord You are faithful! God all things are possible and I'm at the very brink or breakthrough LET IT NOW COME!..... in fact , I would go so far as to say I sense breakthrough has already come and it is beginning to manifest... Blive it. Receive it. Don't believe the lie. It's a Brand New Day!

So rise up Believer..... in the words of Matt Redman..

"I dream of tongues of fire
resting on Your people,
I dream of all the miracles to come.
I hope to see the coming
healing of the nations,
I long to see the prodigals return.
So many hopes and longings in you
when will all the dreams come true?

I’m a believer in your kingdom,
I am a seeker of the new things,
I am a dreamer of some old dreams,
let them now come."

THE TIME IS NOW. BELIEVE AGAIN!

From an unknown soldier of the American Civil War...

“I ASKED FOR STRENGTH THAT I MIGHT ACHIEVE
-HE MADE ME WEAK THAT I MIGHT OBEY

I ASKED FOR HEALTH THAT I MIGHT DO GREATER THINGS
-I WAS GIVEN GRACE THAT I MIGHT DO BETTER THINGS

I ASKED FOR RICHES THAT I MIGHT BE HAPPY
-I WAS GIVEN POVERTY THAT I MIGHT BE WISE

I ASKED FOR POWER THAT I MIGHT HAVE THE PRAISE OF MEN
-I WAS GIVEN WEAKNESS THAT I MIGHT FEEL THE NEED OF GOD

I ASKED FOR ALL THINGS THAT I MIGHT ENJOY LIFE
-I WAS GIVEN LIFE THAT I MIGHT ENJOY ALL THINGS

I RECEIVED NOTHING THAT I ASKED FOR, ALL THAT I HOPED FOR
-MY PRAYER WAS ANSWERED, I WAS MOST BLESSED.”

Bring it….

I’m becoming more and more aware of the awesome privilege of being of Priest of God Most High. Whether it be leading a worship service or talking to a youth group or praying for someone or ministering to a hurting or unsaved person. God has entrusted me (us) with the treasure of manifesting His presence in the midst of any situation. I mean; We come. We focus on Him. He comes. It’s awesome. If there was one thing in my life that I am excited about lately, it’s the re-awakened awareness that I can bring the presence (the manifest felt presence) of God into a space. God has put this gift on me and on all of us. We can lead it. Initiate it. It is His will. I was mindful of this as I spoke at a youth meeting last week and apart from the message I had (which was just okay), I really noticed how the atmosphere changed as I began to focus and re-focus attention on Jesus and keeping it there. From the onset of the worship service through to the word, to a prayer time….not taking our eye off of Him. Flowing ever so mindfully and gingerly from one part of the service to another and noticing His continual flow and manifest presence. Yeah, we’re all saying…DOH!….yeah, what’s the point? This is obvious! But I just think we forget what we carry and who we are. BRING IT! BRING HIM! That’s what it’s all about. Bring Him NOT ONLY in us. But through us and even TO US. That we would attract Him wherever we are. And the atmosphere would attract Him. So that those in our sphere of influence at any particular moment would be impacted by His presence…whether it be our prayer circle, or supermarket check out line, or our office cubicle…..whatever. We lift Him up and He will draw all men unto himself. We also lift Him up and he will be drawn to us and those around us. For where two or more are gathered in His name…there HE IS in the midst.
